Aniek Rooderkerken is a freelance travel writer specialized in cycling trips, adventure travel, outdoor, sports and culture travel. She is founder and editor of travelwriter.nl and also contributes to other offline and online media. She has a passion for the outdoors and traveling, and likes to share these experiences with others. She prefers to ride a bike every day, whether it is a racing bike or mountain bike. Every now and then she exchanges her bike for a pair of walking shoes to go hiking.
Aniek cycles at the Utrecht cycling club CS030 and in 2017 she won the World Human Powered Speed Challenge in Battle Mountain, Nevada, as a rider for the Human Power Team Delft and Amsterdam, and broke the Dutch speed record cycling. That’s now in her name with 75.51 mph or 121.5 kilometers per hour. So she loves speed, but she is as crazy about beautiful cycling trips and long climbs with panoramic views.
Aniek graduated Cum Laude from Utrecht University, where she specialized in the art and literature of the Italian Renaissance. Not surprising she is often found in Italy for her second website Italië Uitgelicht, the online travel magazine about Italy. Born from the love for Italy, on this website the best travel tips, about cities and regions, art and culture, are shared.
Active and adventure travel
Aniek likes to go on an adventure, with an enormous urge for freedom. Cycling in the Nevada desert, hiking in the Dolomites, or bike-picking through Europe. She thus writes blogs about adventurous trips for people who want to feel the wind in their faces, who are looking for unspoilt nature and want to experience a destination as pure as possible. And preferably off the beaten track. For this you really do not have to travel to the other end of the world; micro adventures can also be found close to home.
Sustainable travel is important for Aniek. Traveling with awareness of the environment, the people, the local culture and the local economy. This way, not only you can discover the most beautiful places on earth, but traveling to these places will still be possible in future. It is important to realize that travel often has a significant impact on the environment, but that at the same time the possibilities to make your trip a lot more sustainable and environmentally friendly are increasing. This means instead of traveling by plane, you can also choose to travel (partly) by train, or by walking or cycling. Opt for eco destinations, ecolodges and environmentally friendly excursions and activities that you book in the country itself.
Sustainable travel goes hand in hand with slow travel. If you travel by train, by bicycle or even on foot, you can take more time to get to know a country, region or city. Be open to new experiences, enjoy the nature around you and be more aware of your environment. Take the time to enjoy what you see and to undertake the activities you want to do. No rush, you have the freedom to go and stand where you want. Slow travel challenges you to deviate from the beaten track.
Explore the world!
Chances are that when you become more aware of your surroundings, you discover extraordinary places. During her travels Aniek discovers a lot of UNESCO World Heritage. These places full of culture, nature and history have been given a protected status in order to preserve them for future generations. These are often places that are worth a detour.
